This year I’m living in an apartment. My husband and I have been able to hunker down and make it our own in many ways, except our apartment door is a bit drab. It’s big and grey and considering it’s the first door you pass in the hallway, I think it’s important to make it feel welcoming.
The best way to do that? Why, with a holiday pompom wreath, of course!
You’ve probably seen pompom wreaths taking over the internet this year, and it’s easy to see why, they are just adorable! I couldn’t resist making my own that lasts longer than a natural material wreath, with less mess, too.
Alright, let’s get to making this holiday pompom wreath! Here’s all that you’ll need to make it. And, if you want more visuals, I walk you through this in my YouTube video!

Step 1: Make the Wreath Form
The wreath form is the base that the pompoms are attached to. I chose to make my own from upcycled materials that I had at home. You can certainly purchase a wreath form from a craft store and skip this part and go right to where we attach the ribbon to the wreath form.
But, if you want to make it, here’s how to do it!
Take the 2″ x 4″ cardboard pieces and lay them into a circle, being sure they overlap by 1/2-1″ (the circle should be about 18″ in diameter) and tack them in place with a piece of tape. Then, wrap tape around (going in through the hole in the center and around the outside) to better secure the cardboard into a circle, it should be rigid.
Make 3-4 of these circles (about 15 pieces of cardboard each) and lay them on top of each other and wrap tape around just like before to secure them together.
Take your old fabric and lay it on top of the cardboard as evenly as possible, you want to create uniform volume for the poms to sit on. Secure fabric in place by wrapping tape around the fabric and cardboard circles in a spiral.
Add the ribbon (start here if you purchased your wreath form).
Cut two pieces of ribbon about 4′-6′ in length each (this will vary depending the size of the door you will be hanging this on and how low you want the wreath to hang). If you imagine the wreath form as a clock, tie the end of the first piece of ribbon at 10 o’clock and the other at 2 o’clock.
Step 2: Make the Pompoms
You’ll need three different sized pompoms for this project, I used pompom makers for ease and efficiency. We will be tying the poms to the wreath form using the tails on each pom, so when tying your pom together you use a piece of yarn that is at least 14″ long (you want the tails to be about 6″ each). Below is the break-down of the materials and quantities you’ll need for the pompoms.
42 Large Poms : 3.4 inch Pompom Maker
Color: Medium Thyme
150 Wraps per each side of pompom maker
43 Medium Poms : 2.5 inch Pompom Maker
Color: Tea Leaf
100 Wraps per each side of pompom maker
30 Extra Small Poms : 1.4 inch Pompom Maker
Color: Hot Red
30 Wraps per each side of pompom maker
Bunches: Take 3 pompoms and knot the tails together at the base of the poms to make tight bunches, make 6 bunches.
Step 3: Crochet Bow (Optional)
If you’re a new crocheter, or even if you don’t crochet at all, this part is beginner friendly. All you need is a 5mm crochet hook, a darning needle, and scissors. The Crochet Crowd and Simple Daisy have good intros to crochet and honestly, they do a better job explaining than I can.
I’ve written the pattern out (instead of using abbreviations) for anyone trying crochet for the first time. You can do it! We’ll be using the Hot Red color yarn to make the bow.
Bow Tail
Chain 51
Row 1: Single crochet in each chain, chain 1, turn your work.
Repeat pattern from row 1 until you have 15 rows, cut yarn and weave in ends with needle.
Bow Base
Chain 51, attach last chain to beginning chain with slip stitch to form circle (be sure chain does not get twisted).
Row 1: Chain 1, single crochet in each chain around, join last stitch of row to first stitch with slip stitch
Repeat pattern from row 1 until you have 15 rows, cut yarn and weave in ends with needle.
Bow Assembly
Lay the bow base centered on top of the bow tail. Leaving a 16″ tail, wrap yarn once around the middle of the two pieces and pull tightly to cinch. Continue wrapping yarn around middle 50 times. Leave a length of 16″ and cut yarn. On back side, tie a tight double knot to secure bow.
Step 4: Wreath Assembly
Attach the pompoms by tying the tails around the wreath form. Start on the outside and alternate light and dark poms all the way around, they should be pretty snug together. Trim the tails.
Repeat process on the inside of the wreath, continuing to alternate colors and trim tails when finished.
For the middle of the wreath, alternate pompom colors and make sure to cover wreath form underneath. You can attach these poms by wrapping them around the wreath form, fitting the tails in between the other poms, or you can tie the tails around the yarn from the previous rows.
Next, attach the bow, if you made one. Center the bow on the bottom part of the wreath. Tie the tails around the wreath, fitting the yarn between the poms and double knot tightly. Trim the leftover yarn.
Attach the red pom bundles evenly around the wreath, using the same method as other poms. Then, attach the single red poms around the wreath. Trim all the tails.
Step 5: Hanging the Wreath
You’ll need an extra pair of hands to help with this
Mount a Command hook on the back-side of the door a few inches from the top of the door. Follow the package instructions except the hook should be UPSIDE DOWN.
On the front side of the door, have someone hold the wreath at the right height (for instance, if you need to fit it around a door number). Run the ribbons over the top of the door, then tie them in a secure bow under the hook, trim the excess ribbon.
That’s it, you’re done! Congratulations on your new holiday pompom wreath!
